In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, various technological tools are explored. One of them is digital contact tracing. Contact tracing applications raise various questions about their technology, ethics, and implementation.
All Tech is Human brings together experts in the field to discuss and debate:
Should contact tracing be mandatory?
How do we balance our civil liberties with a demand for collective action?
Thanks to privacy-by-design technology, population-wide mandatory use of digital contact tracing apps (DCT) can be both more efficient and more respective of privacy than conventional manual contact tracing, and considerably less intrusive than current lockdowns. Even if counterintuitive, mandatory private-by-design DCT is therefore the only ethical option for fighting COVID-19.
As coronavirus cases increase worldwide, institutions keep their communities informed with frequent updates—but only up to a point. They share minimal information such as number of cases, but omit the names of individuals and identifying information.
Many institutions are legally obligated to protect individual privacy, but is this prohibition of transparency ethically justified?
How should the future’s developers, data scientists, and business leaders think about the ethical questions that arise in AI technologies? What does AI ethics mean? How does it become relevant to our lives and to what we create? How can we create better technologies for the betterment of the society?
These are some of the questions we discuss in this seminar.
After the Lab’s workshop on “Black Mirror and Philosophy”, Dr. Ihle and Dr. Canca’s chapter on ‘White Christmas’ is published. The chapter focuses on the tension between privacy and access to information.
