Due to evolving trends in AI research, specifically Machine Learning (ML), IRBs are faced with growing concern over how to apply regulations under the current regulatory framework. Not only are the regulations outdated and do not account for advancing technology, but core concepts in research ethics do not carry out the same implications when applied to AI research. Researchers are equally confused as to what constitutes human subject research. This project proposes two solutions: Examining and re-defining core concepts in research ethics as applied in AI research, and using these definitions, develop guiding documents for IRB reviewers and researchers.
